It's Time...
for a New Community Center for Los Gatos

Design concepts for a one- or two-story Los Gatos community center.

Most Bay Area communities have an intergenerational (all ages) community center, and many of those centers are large, modern buildings.  Los Gatos has fallen behind but now a group of citizens has launched a campaign to build a new community center that will be the pride of our town.

Background

In 1966 Los Gatos was among the first South Bay  towns to open a community center.  Back then, we understood the value of having one central place for all generations to gather and were willing to invest to make it happen.

Today we have a 3-room Youth Recreation Center (housed in the old community center building ) plus a too-small Adult Recreation Center (which is in need of extensive maintenance).

Meanwhile our neighbors continued to invest and now have large, modern, light-filled buildings that serve all ages, from students to seniors.

It is time for a new Los Gatos community center!

The Need

We asked people in town, "Do we need a new community center?"  Here is what they said:

Los Gatan's have identified.

Quotes from Elected Officials

Elected officials have seen communities up and down the bay build new, modern community centers, have seen the positive impact on our towns, and are eager to talk about it.

Project Status

2023

We kicked off the project by visiting many community centers in the south bay looking for ideas and best practices.

2024

We conducted extensive community research to uncover the unique needs of Los Gatos:

  • WORKSHOPS:  Two were held that captured dreams, ideas, and concerns.   Each workshop attracted around 100 community members.  We also held a specialized focus group for Los Gatos High School teens.

  • SURVEY: A survey was conducted to exploring concepts, programs and needs.  We received over 600 responses from households that represented over 1,800 citizens.

The overwhelming sentiment in both the workshops and the survey was clear: Los Gatan's want a new community center.

At the end of the year we released a Community Center Needs Report (available for download below).

2025

There was a lot of ongoing activity this year.  We released a set of conceptual renderings of the new community center.  We built awareness by speaking at many local groups, working with the press, and participating in various public events (ending the year with a float in the Los Gatos Holiday parade).  We continued to investigate potential site locations and opened dialogs with various site owners. And we â€‹spent time expanding our needs research, with a special focus on teens and families.

2026

Our primary goals for this year include:

  1. Raising awareness of the need for a new community center

  2. Acquiring a site

  3. Beginning fundraising via donations, grants, and endowments.

  4. Continuing to gather community needs, and further refine our plans.

After extensive research we are also delighted to to have released the Teen Needs Report (see below).
